EXAMINING ALL THINGS BEAUTIFUL

Watch the new David Bowie video for The Stars Are Out Tonight by Floria Sigismondi with Tilda Swinton with models Andrej Pejic and Saskia De Brauw. It’s rather splendid.

New Work: Vogue Russia. Photographed by Hans Feurer, Styled by Ekaterina Mukhina, Hair by Erika Svedgevik and model is the gorgeous Catherine McNeil. We shot this in the streets of hot and humid Miami. Supermodel Cat literally stopped traffic. The styling of this story was bright & bold so I decided to keep the makeup very naturally beautiful (to go with the slicked back hair) clean, minimal and with definition in the brow and a soft matte smoky brown shadow on the eyes with tons of black eye pencil in the water line and lots of mascara for extra definition to complete the look I added a red graphic shape under the eye for strength and a pop of colour, Hans loves a bit of tribal so everyone was happy. Hope you like it as much as I do.

New Work: Flair Magazine March 2013. Photographed by Katja Rahlwes, Fashion Editor Sissy Vian, Hair by Luke Hersheson and the model is the gorgeous Karmen Pedaru. This stunner was shot in a glam hotel in Marbella where The Obamas had vacationed. Chic don’t you think? I kept the makeup inspiration as very rich, very beautiful and had a bit of 90’s Versace Supermodel in mind when I designed it using all products by MAC Cosmetics. I kept the skin fresh with a light base using my favourite face & body with a little strobe cream to highlight and give a dewyness to highlight areas and a matte t-zone using blot powder, the colour palette was only neutral and earth tones. I did everything makeup wise from groomed  defined brows, contoured cheek bones using the sculpt cream, eyes with wedge and mylar shadow, blacktrack cream liner and tons of mascara using my fav the haute & naughty in black and some cleverly placed individual lashes. It was a subtle exercise of contour and construction beauty wise and I have to say it had been a while since I did a brown lip, it just felt right and I loved using old school spice pencil and taupe lipstick.  Hope you like it and may I say that for a neutral makeup look there is absolutely nothing natural about it!

New Work: Vogue Ukraine 1st Issue. Daria Werbowy on the cover and main fash inside. Photographed by Steven Pan. Fashion Editor Ekaterina Mukhina and hair by Samantha Hillerby. Was a joy to be part of the launch of a new territory Vogue. For the beauty I wanted to evoke a bit of old fashioned Hollywood silver screen glamour but kept it modern and cool too. Was a dream shoot and am proud to have worked on this. Hope you like it.

Welcome to Fashion Week AW13

Welcome to Fashion Week AW13

New Work: Purple Magazine SS213 Issue 19. Photographer: Katja Rahwles Fashion Editor: Sissy Vian Hair: Luke Hersheson and I used Nars Cosmetics for the makeup. The model is the one and only Anja Rubik. We shot this in Spain in the most incredible house that looked straight out of a Disney version of Arabian Nights and not in a good way! For the makeup I wanted to create a bright and colourful story and used lots of electric blues, parrot greens and hot yellow’s with red glossy lips and sometimes gold eyes and nude lips with lots of black 70’s style lashes. For the beauty references I was influenced by Roxy Music album cover gals, Debby Harry and Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface. So get ready this Spring Summer 13 to pull out all your brightest makeup and do like Tony Montana and say hello to my little friend.

New Work: Vogue Australia March 2013. Photographer: Hans Feurer Fashion Editor: HeatherMary Jackson Hair: Ward Stegerhoek Model: Aline Weber. We shot this beautiful story in Miami and the beauty was loosely based on Gwyneth’s character Margot in The Royal Tenenbaums. It was basically an eccentric cool sexy girl with classic sporty & preppy elements to the clever styling. I fell in love with the Computer Love cardigan and bought it after the shoot it is by new underground label Eddie Eddie By Billy Tommy. I kept the makeup minimal on the skin because Aline is so gorgeous naturally needing minimal coverage in the humidity and I worked with shine products in highlight areas. I did a heavy black kohl around the eyes very similar to the film reference. Geek was never so chic.

Happy Valentine’s Day. Say Anything  is a favourite romantic 80’s teen flick directed by Cameron Crowe and starring John Cusack and Ione Skye. Watch the trailer here

Minnie The Moocher with Cab Calloway and his band starring the beautiful Ms Betty Boop and Bimbo This cartoon from 1932 was banned by censors for its rather racy and sensitive material. Rather tame by todays standards but it is such clever beautiful animation with great music.

Have a look at this  article on the CNN website by Moni Basu and images by Christopher Anderson & the interesting variety of reader comments too. During hectic stressful times at fashion week I have in jest referred to the frantic backstage area as a war zone and the seated area for the show as the front line but I never really would compare the two seriously. In these images one is a sad horrific subject matter and the other is a beautiful subject matter. It is interesting to see the 2 side by side not necessarily as art or controversy but because the photographer’s style, composition & cropping is similar and the subject matter is polar opposite. Seeing these images provokes thought, debate and discussion.

Man Ray Exhibition on now in London at The NPG. I am obsessed and in awe of the timeless images by Man Ray. I can’t tell you how many shoots/shows/ads his iconic work is used as a reference by me or by the teams I work with and still so many years later used as a barometer of good taste and beauty. Go check this show out.
